Atlanta Ballet – Love Stories

Atlanta Ballet’s Love Stories at Cobb Energy Centre – May 10 – 12, 2013

BOAC TV talked with guest dancer Domenico Luciano of Dominic Walsh Dance Theatre for the Atlanta premiere of the White Swan pas de deux.  We also talked to Annabelle Lopez Ochoa choreographer for Requiem for a Rose, a passionate piece that blends contemporary staging with classical dance.

For Atlanta’s premiere, the White Swan pas de deux will be performed by guest artists Domenico Luciano and Dominic Walsh of Dominic Walsh Dance Theatre (DWDT) in Houston. DWDT first performed the duet in 2009 and is the only company outside of Bourne’s own that has been permitted to perform the work.

Set to an achingly romantic and longing adagio by Schubert, Requiem for a Rose is  passionate piece that blends contemporary staging with classical dance. Become mesmerized by the movements as the dancers are transformed into a garden of blossoming roses. Netherlands-based choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa presents a piece filled with “tender” moments that is “deftly and honestly crafted” (Dance View Times).

World renowned trumpeter and vocalist Joe Gransden has performed worldwide with the big bands of Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller and most recently spent the last year performing alongside saxophone great Kenny G. Known first for his hard bop approach on the trumpet, Gransden’s singing voice has been compared to that of Chet Baker and Frank Sinatra.

Skelton Sam

A native of Conyers, Georgia, Sam Skelton has been active on the Atlanta music scene for well over two decades. Mr. Skelton graduated summa cum laude from Georgia State University and the private studio of Tony Carere with a degree in Jazz Studies. During his course of study at GSU, Sam was a Montgomery Music Scholar and a two-time fellowship recipient to the Aspen Music Festival. He continued his saxophone studies with Kenneth Radnofsky at Boston University in 1991.  Sam is currently Director of Jazz Studies and Lecturer in Saxophone at Kennesaw State University.  Sam remains very active in the studio and can be heard on recordings by such artists as: Elton John, Decemberadio, Babbie Mason, Howard Tate, Matchbox 20, Train, Edwin McCain, The Gap Band and The Ohio Players.

Atlanta Ballet – Love Stories

For the first time ever, Atlanta audiences will have the opportunity to witness one of the biggest sensations in modern dance – the centerpiece duet from British choreographer Matthew Bourne’s Tony Award-winning Swan Lake. Bourne, who is widely praised as the UK’s most popular and successful choreographer, debuted the almost all-male Swan Lake in 1995 – eschewing tradition and turning the ballet world on its head. Bourne’s avant-garde interpretation of Swan Lake tells the timeless story of ill-fated, forbidden love with dynamic modern day flair. New York Times dance critic Gia Kourlas described the ballet as “a painterly exploration of desire told through dance.” For Atlanta’s premiere, the White Swan pas de deux will be performed by guest artists Domenico Luciano and Dominic Walsh of Dominic Walsh Dance Theatre (DWDT) in Houston. An American Cancer Society Benefit

In recognition of The American Cancer Society’s 100th birthday, the society will host an evening with legendary music producer, Quincy Jones, during a special benefit concert celebrating 100 years of progress in the fight against cancer. Jones will be joined by special guests, James Ingram, Patti Austin, Siedah Garrett, Nikki Yanofsky and Alfredo Rodriguez.  One of the most influential jazz musicians of the 20th century, Jones’ creative magic has spanned more than six decades. He now brings that magic to the stage with the American Cancer Society to help celebrate 100 years of progress in the fight against cancer and usher the organization into the most ambitious undertaking yet – finishing the fight!  On Wednesday, May 22, 2013, the American Cancer Society will celebrate 100 years of saving lives and creating more birthdays.

“A Tree for Two was born in 1996 I met with drummer Richard Letourneau. We wanted to create an acoustic trio, and after Fabrice Bistoni bass and Eric Fassio, now is Pascal Masson who joined us.
A Tree For Two is a group that is in line Jazz / World of our time, focusing on pure sounds of instruments without artifice, his improvising melodic chorus on themes borrowed from the cultures of the world: classical, jazz, Contemporary, folk, flamenco … ”

“Our new album” Apocalypso “has been published,
result of the project a CD concerts we did in 2000. Finally the disc does not happen for technical reasons and
also artistic – we were not, Richard and I, quite satisfied with what was engraved for the offer for sale.
But we had quite a few new songs that we wished to make known to the public that follows us and that is how the decision to release a new studio recording was motivated. Meanwhile, the general psychosis as a result of September 11 made the album title has imposed itself. I wanted to make a record that is not particularly happy but which expresses all the potential there is in every single one of us to get out of the stupidity of our societies “Loft-botomisantes” and go rather to the simple and beautiful things . For this, the image of the tree painted covers for our two albums (by Christophe Girard, painter Nice adoption) is representative of the force and vitality of nature to overcome the ground and s’ rise above. Included in the “Apocalypso” are more excuses to develop content that was close to my heart for a long time, as in “Sole Mio”, a penchant for their titles and what they may want to serve. This is one time the song is written that one can just dream it … and finally my influences are reflected in the compositions as much as in the standard which the public sometimes think that we have chosen with reference to other musicians. I myself am not risky, at least, not in this one! ”
