When Deaton joined The Justin Chesarek Quintet (Justin Chesarek, drums; Craig Shaw Bass; Akeem Marable, alto saxophone; Nick Rosen, keys) two years ago, he began writing tunes for their regular Wednesday night gig at Atlanta’s hallowed jazz club, Churchill Grounds, and has cultivating his tunes ever since. Deaton walked into the studio with his original bandmates and laid down six inspired tracks that will keep you humming for days. It’s not just straight-ahead, swing, or bop. It’s an original ATL Jazz revival played by five smokin’ musicians.
The album’s title track is intense, building tension from the first note and releasing when Marable steps up to the mic and unleashes a boat load of energy. “Eclipse takes the listener on an easy ride, with a lively, bouncing melody. The rest of the album progresses naturally and is assembled well, making it easy to just hit play and listen, without skipping from track to track.
