ROXIE WATSON is a five-piece string band that is birthing a new musical genre, “alterna-grass” a finely crafted blend of bluegrass, country, western and blues, with splashes of soul, zydeco and Hee Haw. They draw from the varied talents and musical histories of each of her members to deliver rich harmonies, amazing fretwork, and soulful solos. Lisa Love of The Georgia Music Foundation and Georgia Music Magazine says, “When you have a group of women who are natural story-tellers, who sooth their aggressive musical chops with beautiful harmonies, temper their rock-n-roll sensibilities with an understanding of Appalachian tradition, and come off as a little bit Keith Richards, a little bit Bill Monroe, you get Roxie Watson.” They are currently touring in support of their debut 2010 CD, True Stories.
To get a taste of what New Orleans has to offer, look no further than singer-songwriter, ALEX MCMURRAY. Often compared to Tom Waits, McMurray croons with whiskey-soaked vocals and bares the soul of the city with his lyrical imagery of smoky Ninth Ward bars and sullen walks down empty sidewalks. Through acoustic and jazz backdrops, McMurray weaves songs that immortalize the sounds of the city he calls home. After time spent trying to live outside of New Orleans in Tokyo and New York, McMurray couldn’t stay away from the city. After his return, he formed the Valparaiso Men’s Chorus and joined forces with members of G. Love and Special Sauce, The Iguanas, and the New Orleans Klezmer Allstars to make Jamaican pop band, 007. He released his first solo album, Banjaxed, in 2004, and his latest album, How to Be a Cannonball, won “Album of the Year” in 2010 at the Big Easy Awards. While you can catch McMurray playing around New Orleans with many bands in legendary venues and festivals, you can’t miss your opportunity to catch him here at Eddie’s Attic!
